My Glucose Tolerance Test

This morning my nurse woke me up at 6:00 to give me my glucose tolerance test. It consisted of drinking some very orange, very sweet syrupy stuff. It wasn’t delicious, but I was definitely prepared for something much worse. I asked her if maybe I could just eat some sugary snacks instead, but she was adamant that I drink the orange stuff. An hour later she came back with a needle to take a blood sample, which would then be sent to the lab for analysis, to see how well I convert glucose, to see if I have gestational diabetes. I then proceeded to sleep for the rest of the morning. (I did wake up enough to eat breakfast.) I have been sleeping a lot lately, but I think it might be the combined effects of the sleeping pill and the Flexeril I have been taking every night. The Flexeril is a muscle relaxer that I have been taking to relieve the muscle pain in my rib cage from coughing. I think my cough is gone enough that I can stop the Flexeril now.

So I didn’t pass my glucose tolerance test, but I didn’t fail it miserably either. I need to retake it, but of course it will be more difficult the second time around. That will be in a few days. I guess I should have studied harder.

I also found out that it is the high risk pregnancy specialist who wanted me discharged from the hospital when I reached 25 weeks, but my regular doctors do not want me going home until at least 28 weeks. Their concern is if I will be able to adhere to strict bed rest at home with Rachel and other temptations enticing me to do more than I should.

  1. Good times, huh?! Well, it sounds like you're doing well inspite of being stuck in the hospital! Is time going quickly for you? Just know we're thinking about you & you're in our prayers. ; )

  2. I'm sorry you failed your test! 🙁 The 2nd one I had to take was a 3-hr test where I drank the stuff & they took blood & urine samples every hr for 3 hrs – without being able to eat or drink anything until it's over, not even water. I failed that one & I felt horribly sick b/c of all the sugar. Good luck again & I hope you pass! 🙂

  3. I am so sorry yo have to do the 3 hour test. I failed all four times. I was also on bedrest with #3 and it is NOT fun. People think that having others wait on you would be great and it is for about ten minutes.
I would love to come see you. I hope you are doing well. I always secretly knew that someday you would be kept in a hospital against your will. 🙂

  4. I had to do the 3 hr. test with my last pregnancy…and I failed it! But I was able to keep my sugar levels under control with a glucomater throughout the pregnancy. I was their tester on a new prgram in Lexington and it went really well. Maybe they will let you do that too if you have to. Good luck and take of of the two of you! 🙂
I enjoyed our visit! I love that little bear…I bet Rachel does too. I think that was such a great idea! Your friend is a fun lady!

  5. I don’t know why everyone complains so much about that drink… I really don’t think it’s that bad. They tell you you have like 10 minutes to drink it or something and I can down it in like a minute. This time around it was fruit punch flavored! Maybe I like it cause I’m used to all the Diet soda!

Anyways, I hope you feel better soon… I’m glad your cough is getting better, I was afraid that all that coughing was going to put you into labor itself! jen

  6. I failed the first test, too, but then I passed the 3 hour test–so it can be done! I think that stuff was nasty, nasty too. Good luck!!
