Winning Colors is todays Derby winner of the day. She was the third filly to win the Kentucky Derby, which she accomplished in 1988.
Winning Colors was born February 14, 1985. She was registered as a roan, but was in fact gray with a broad band of white down her face. She was bred by Echo Valley Farm, was owned by Eugene V. Klein, and trained by D. Wayne Lukas.
At the Derby, Winning Colors broke well to lead the stellar field of colts, and was able to hold off a strong charge in the homestretch by Forty Niner and won by a neck.
She finished third in the Preakness, but did not finish in the money in the Belmont.
After her campaign as a four-year-old Winning Colors retired. She was euthanized February 17, 2008 at the age of 23 as a result of complications from colic. She is buried at Greentree Farm near Lexington, Kentucky.
